EURO 2020

Real Madrid News: Lunin shows there is a goalkeeper beyond Courtois

Even with Carlo Ancelotti coming in to replace Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid, some players in the starting XI remain untouchable. Thibaut Courtois is one of those and the Belgian isn’t likely to lose his place in the Los Blancos XI anytime soon, but Ancelotti can be encouraged by the progress made by Andriy Lunin.

The Ukrainian goalkeeper, in the Belgian’s continued post-Euro 2020 absence, started in Real Madrid‘s disappointing pre-season loss at Rangers on Sunday. He was one of very few players to have ended the day with positive marks. In fact, it was only Lunin and Rodrygo who made a positive impression in Scotland.

Lucas Vazquez made a mistake that led to the first goal and Lunin was unable to do anything about either of Rangers‘ two on the day.

Despite having conceded twice in a 2-1 loss, Lunin can hold his head high. Ancelotti, for his part, knows that there is life beyond Courtois to protect Real Madrid‘s goal. Should anything happen to the Belgian, Lunin is ready to step in and do a job.
