Real Madrid | Casillas rules out Ancelotti link-up: “I don’t see myself coaching”

Former Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has given his opinion on the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabéu for a second spell in charge and stated that Sergio Ramos is “hugely valuable” to the side as question marks over where the current captain will be playing next season remain.

“He is someone who knows that club,” Casillas said of the Italian tactician while at an event in Ávila for the Johan Cruyff foundation. “He was there for two years before and he won the long-awaited décima. I think it is a very good decision on the part of the club. He knows the club and is well-liked by the board and the players. Carlo, as well as being a great coach with lots of experience, is a wonderful person.”

Casillas rules out Real Madrid return

However, Casillas ruled out a return to Madrid to be Ancelotti’s assistant as the search for a number two for the Italian continues. “In his first spell he had Zidane. We all remember the success he had. I think it would be normal [to employ a former player]. They’re talking about Arbeloa aren’t they? That would be a good move and I’m sure he will surround himself with people who know the club and do a good job. Would I be interested? No, no. I don’t really see myself being a coach. It doesn’t appeal to me.”

“Ramos is one of the best in the world”

On the future of his former teammate for Madrid and Spain, Sergio Ramos, Casillas said: “People can have their own opinions but it’s a decision between Sergio and the club. He is a hugely valuable player; everybody knows him and he is one of the best in the world. I hope for the good of football they can come to an understanding. The truth is I don’t know that much about the situation. As a fan and someone who loves football, Sergio is a very important player but you have to see it from the club’s point of view as well. Who would lose out most? I would because I like football. I would like him to stay, but it’s up to them to decide.”
