EURO 2020

Gareth Bale slammed as Wales inquest gets underway following Euro 2020 exit

Gareth Bale has been slammed for not working hard enough for Wales during their Euro 2020 loss to Denmark.

The Danes sent their opponents packing with a comprehensive 4-0 win in the last 16 at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Wales had qualified for the knockout stages after finishing as Group A runners-up and there was talk of them emulating their Euro 2016 performance that saw them reach the last four.

It wasn’t to be however and Bale’s work rate – or lack of – has been highlighted by Tony Cascarino.

He claimed on TalkSport that Cristiano Ronaldo works harder for Portugal and thought he should’ve done more to help his full-back.

“I don’t think there’s any Welsh player that is going to shout at Gareth Bale and the manager has made it quite clear that he’s going to leave him on,” said Cascarino.

“You get why because he’s a threat when he has the ball.

“For Ronaldo’s goal against Germany, where he heads it away from a corner and then sprints 90 yards up the other end to get on the end of something.

“I would argue that Ronaldo works far harder than Gareth does. No one is going to point the finger at Gareth because he’s on a pedestal, rightly so because he’d achieved a lot in his career.

“But he had to work harder, he had to help Connor Roberts out yesterday, but he didn’t because he’s so concerned about receiving the ball and what he does.”

Bale, who later stormed off from his interview when quizzed on his Wales future, admitted he was disappointing to exit the competition in the manner they did.

Denmark scored twice in the last ten minutes while Wales also had a man sent-off.

“It was not how we wanted the game to go,” The Real Madrid star told the BBC. “We started very well for the first 25 minutes, but conceded a goal and the game changed a little bit.

“We came out second half trying to play and unfortunately made a mistake to concede the (second) goal which I guess killed the momentum on our side.

“Obviously to finish the game how we did is disappointing.”

Denmark, who won their final game to make the knockout stages, will now face either the Netherlands or the Czech Republic in Baku in the quarter-finals.
