After 180 caps and winning a World Cup and two European championships with the Spain national team, star defender Sergio Ramos won’t be able to join his teammates in their quest for a fourth European title.
The official list was announced by Spain’s head coach Luis Enrique some days ago and football fans were shocked and probably went back in time to 2008, when former ‘La Roja’ manager Luis Aragonés left out of the squad another Real Madrid icon, Raúl González.

Sergio Ramos’ injuries and inactivity this season has been the reason for the centre-back’s exclusion from the Spain squad.
Since the start of 2021, the Andalusian defender has played only five games for Real Madrid: two in January, followed by a two-month absence -after undergoing surgery to address an issue with the inner meniscus of his left knee-, two in March and the last one in the Champions League semi-finals against Chelsea.
“Ramos has not been able to compete this season, he has not been able to train with the group”, said Luis Enrique. “I clearly see that it’s a complicated decision. I recommended that he be selfish and that he regains his level to play in his club and in the national team”, he added.
Ramos, who won’t be involved with Spain at international level for the first time since 2004, was disappointed with the news, but accepted the situation.

“I have fought and worked every day, in body and soul, to be able to reach 100% for Real Madrid and the national team but things don’t always work out the way we’d like”, he wrote on his Instagram account.
“I wish all my teammates the very best of luck and I hope we have a great Euros. I’ll be another fan cheering on from home.”, he concluded.
