Uruguay coach tells Edinson Cavani it would be best if he left Man Utd

Uruguay’s assistant coach Mario Rebollo has told Edinson Cavani it would benefit the national team if he quit Manchester United and moved to Boca Juniors.

The forward has been heavily linked with a return to South America despite spending less than a year at Old Trafford.

Cavani moved to the Red Devils on a free in the summer having left PSG when his contract expired.

But the 34-year-old’s father has hit out at his treatment at United and claimed he wants to be “comfortable” as he talked up a summer exit.

“Edinson is going to end up playing in South America. I want Edinson to play in a team that fights for something important.”

Oscar Tabarez’s No 2 is clearly in agreement as he seeks to have Cavani as close as possible.

A home international game means the striker engaging in a 14,000 mile round trip.

Moving to Boca would be advantageous for the national team, but Rebollo’s main priority is to have Cavani firing on all cylinders.

“It helps the national team if Cavani goes to Boca or wherever,” Rebollo told 2 De Punta.

“The priority is that he plays where he is comfortable and with a good competitive level. If he’s close to here it’d be great, but if he’s not comfortable he would not bear it much.”

“It would be good for us if Cavani plays where he feels most comfortable. It makes no difference to me if it’s Boca or another place, where he’s better.

“We have to have him with rhythm and competition.”

Cavani has scored 51 times for Uruguay and helped them win the Copa America a decade ago.
