No tarpaulin for PSG tie as Real Madrid want intimidation factor at Bernabeu

There will be no tarpaulin on the Castellana stand in the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu for Real Madrid‘s Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain.

The architects of the stadium’s renovations have begun planning the reconstruction of this side stand with a view to increasing the capacity and the atmosphere ahead of the visit of Mauricio Pochettino‘s side.

At the moment there are three areas of the stand that have been rendered redundant by the works and the large tarpaulin is to be removed from the north corner section in the coming days.

The final decision to raise up the Castellana stand will be taken soon, but it will depend on the agreement of engineers, architects and builders, each of whom have been working on the stadium in the last year to set up a retractable pitch mechanism, which will be under this stand.

It certainly won’t just any stand when it’s done.

The work to redo the south stand seems altogether more complex, with diggers and cranes still visible across the width of the stand on non-matchdays.

It’s a crucial part of the overall work, and the stand won’t be able to fill its capacity for the PSG tie.

Everything is being done at a rapid pace to ensure the works are finished as soon as possible, but there remains an awful lot of work still to do.

More than 800 workers still come into the ground daily to complete the project, which is starting to take shape but still is a long way from the finish line.

Nonetheless things are going largely according to plan and some areas are already able to adapt to the new normal, with the car parks working well and the players able to access the ground from the new entrance.

The works are set to be finished in February 2023, even if some say it won’t be totally done until the June of next year.

The huge VIP area remains one part of the project that has barely begun.

It shouldn’t also be forgotten that there is also a big piece of work to be done on the exterior of the ground, with pedestrianisation and green zones set to be implemented.

But when it’s done, it will be an example to the world of the latest in design, functionality, technology and of course, location.
