Barcelona: Laporta: Xavi deserves a lot of credit for how Spain are playing

Spain are doing well at the World Cup and Joan Laporta believes Xavi Hernandez‘s work with players like Gavi, Pedri and Ferran Torres has helped.

The Barcelona president called for the Catalan club to be given some credit for what La Roja are doing in Qatar.

“I think they’re playing fantastically well and at Barcelona we’re proud to see our players in the team,” Laporta said at a tournament held on Monday, one organised by Enric Masip.

“There are great players there who are impressing the world and most of them are playing for Barcelona.

“We’re proud to see these players performing well.

Luis Enrique is taking all the pressure on himself and letting the players, especially the young ones, focus.

“Spain are one of the favourites to win the World Cup, along with Brazil and France.

“For the national team to be doing so well is partly because of the good work that has been done at Barcelona.

Luis Enrique has made good decisions and picked a unite with players who mostly play for Barcelona.

“That makes it easier to adapt. Xavi deserves a lot of credit because he has got many of these players playing well at Barcelona.”

“He knows that Barcelona is his home, but I won’t discuss current issues with him because he has a contract with PSG and that would be bad,” the president said.

Barcelona’s transfer plans

As for Barcelona‘s other transfer targets, Laporta discussed the restrictions that financial fair play will cause.

“We don’t need to make signings in January unless something changes, as we already did a lot in summer,” he said.

“We are satisfied with how the season is going despite going out in the Champions League.

“The priority is the league and we are in first place. We are improving every day.

“The issue of the financial fair play affects us, with very restrictive rules and they are getting stricter and stricter.

“On Thursday we received a new letter which makes the salary margin even more restrictive.

“They should review it because it doesn’t make any sense.

“I wish in the past they had had this obsession with financial fair play, then perhaps Barcelona wouldn’t have been in this situation, although we are overcoming it with hard work.”
