Harry Maguire is now Manchester United captain and a stalwart for England, whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin is one of the most potent strikers in the Premier League with Everton.

But when it comes to the Blades’ long list of alumni, Kyle Walker is arguably top of the pile.

The full-back has helped Manchester City lift three Premier League titles since his arrival from Spurs in 2017, and remains a crucial component in Pep Guardiola’s side.

Still aged just 31, Walker looks as though he has plenty left in the tank to remain at the highest level for a good few years yet.

But giving an insight into how he would like to end his career, he has dropped a hint about a potential Bramall Lane return.

Walker came through United’s academy and after just seven appearances for the South Yorkshire side he was on the move, with Tottenham forking out a combined fee of £10m for him and Kyle Naughton.

Walker would return to United on loan for the 2009-10 season before going on to become a top-flight regular with Spurs and now City.

Speaking to the BBC’s Friday Football Social, Walker said: “I’ll go until my legs don’t want to go.

“Until they go I’ll keep running. I made it very clear I want to go back and play for Sheffield United.

“I started there, played there from when I was six or seven years old. If I am dropping down and becoming a burden, obviously not. But as long as I am still enjoying it, I’ll keep doing it.”

Those recent comments were not the first occasion he has dropped such a hint, however.

He scored the only goal of the game when the two sides met at Bramall Lane in October 2020.

His post-match comments from that day also alluded to a possible return.

He told BT Sport: “When I played for Aston Villa my first game for Villa was here and I scored with my left peg which was a rare goal as well.

“I seem to like this ground. Hopefully… we’ll never know in the future.”

Walker is under contract at the Etihad until 2024, when he will be aged 34.

His old club were relegated from the Premier League last season and are currently struggling in the bottom half of the Championship.

Last week saw United dispense with Slavisa Jokanovic after just a few months in the job.

Paul Heckingbottom was immediately installed as his successor after the former under-23s boss was given a four-and-a-half year contract.
