Leicester’s James Maddison is ready to return after a month out with a hip problem

Leicester handed fitness boost ahead of Manchester City clash with James Maddison ready to return after a month out with a hip problem and Brendan Rodgers backs his midfielder to make England’s Euro 2020 squad

  • Brendan Rodgers says he ‘looks great’ ahead of the visit of Pep Guardiola’s side

Brendan Rodgers believes James Maddison is firmly in the frame for a place in England’s Euro 2020 squad despite missing the last get-together through injury.

The Leicester playmaker is available for Saturday’s clash with Manchester City after recovering from a hip problem that has kept him out since the 2-1 win at Aston Villa on February 21.

Maddison has won only one senior cap – against Montenegro in 2019 – and faces a battle to break into the squad for the tournament due to his lack of recent playing time.

But Foxes boss Rodgers is confident that Maddison’s class will make it difficult for Gareth Southgate to ignore.

‘He has shown consistently through his level of performance that he warrants a place within the squad,’ said Rodgers.

‘But it is obviously a very competitive and very talented squad.

‘If he can get back playing and get back to the level he has been at then it gives Gareth and his staff a decision to make. Of course he would love to be in that squad.

‘He just needs to concentrate on getting back for Leicester and getting back into some sort of rhythm to finish the season strong, then that is all you can do.’

Maddison’s return is a huge boost for Leicester as they try to cement their place in the top four during the season’s run-in.

They will also have defender Ricardo Pereira available against Pep Guardiola’s team.

Rodgers added: ‘Clearly, James is not 100 per cent match fit but in terms of his football fitness he looks great. In the last few weeks he has been working with the team and the players we have available.

‘This week he has stepped it up and looks great which is really good news. Hopefully he can stay fit now until the end of the season.’
