FC Barcelona – La Liga: Aguero overtakes Depay to edge closer to Barcelona move

The current season is far from over, but Barcelona are already working hard behind the scenes on their plans for next season and it looks ever clearer that Sergio Aguero could be part of those plans.

The club want to add a goalscorer to the squad and don’t have a lot of money to spend on transfer fees, so the Argentine and his expiring contract are an attractive proposition.

The added bonus that the Manchester City striker offers is his friendship with Lionel Messi, with Barcelona believing his signing could help persuade Messi to stay.

The 32-year-old isn’t the only player on the Blaugrana radar, however, with a number of options being weighed up.

If the Catalan club can manage to free up sufficient funds, Erling Haaland would be their top priority at centre-forward, but they’re only expected to move for him if they’re unable to re-sign Neymar as there’s no chance of being able to afford both.

Neymar, like Aguero, is friends with Messi and known to be keen to link up with him again, but his signing is dependent on many factors.

If Barcelona do find themselves with some money to play around with, they are also still keeping tabs on another Argentine, Inter forward Lautaro Martinez.

It isn’t clear if securing Aguero would veto a move for any of the other three should it become possible, but Aguero is the only one they can make a move for at this time and they don’t want to miss out.

Internal debate

If the club can only move for one high-profile attacking free agent, however, there is some debate within the club as to who that should be.

Some, including head coach Ronald Koeman, had been in favour of signing Memphis Depay, but the need for Aguero at this time is more urgent and that’s why the club are pushing ahead with trying to land the Argentine international.

Depay is a wide player and would be competing with Ansu Fati, Ousmane Dembele and Trincao, while Aguero is a central striker and that’s what Barcelona want more right now.

A move for the Dutchman hasn’t been ruled out, even if Aguero signs, but he isn’t a priority at the moment.

Everything depends on finances, even in the cases of free agents Aguero and Depay, and the Manchester City legend will need to take a significant pay cut to join his friend Messi in Barcelona.
