The former Manchester United boss needed emergency surgery and spent several days in intensive care after collapsing in May 2018.

And he jumped at the chance to meet more than 30 doctors, nurses, paramedics and porters who looked after him at Salford Royal Hospital.

The 79-year-old said: “I was lucky to survive. I appreciate I survived and I appreciate the people who helped me through it – the NHS is fantastic.

“They asked me if I would come in and meet all the staff who contributed in the time I was in there. I went there and there were over 30 of them including the ambulance drivers and the porters.

“Everybody involved was there, it was fantastic to be able to thank them.”

Glasgow-born Fergie who was speaking on the official Manchester United podcast, raised £400,000 in 2019 as a thank-you to the health service.

In a documentary released this year called ‘Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In’, he told how he feared he would never talk again after waking from surgery.

Recalling his time in hospital, the former United boss said: “It was beautiful weather, I always remember that.

“You’re looking out of the hospital window and you’re saying, ‘I wonder how many more sunny days I’m ever going to see again?’ I found that difficult.

“Then I lost my voice, I just couldn’t get a word out. That was terrifying, absolutely terrifying. Everything was going through my mind, ‘Is my memory going to be back and am I ever going to speak again?’

“I would have hated to have lost my memory. It would have been a terrible burden on the family, if I’m sitting in the house and I don’t know who I am.

“Then this speech therapist came and started working on me, writing down all the members of your family, all the members of your football team, then asked me questions about animals, fish, birds.

“Eventually, after 10 days, my voice came back. I realised then, having gone through all that, my memory was fine.”

Sir Alex took charge at United in 1986 and in 27 years won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and the Champions League twice.

The legendary manager also lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup, Uefa Super Cup, Fifa Club World Cup and many more trophies during his time at Old Trafford.

Ferguson is also fondly remembered for his achievements at Aberdeen, winning three league titles, four Scottish Cups and the Scottish League Cup.

He famously guided the Scottish minnows to victory over Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1983, one of the greatest shocks in football history.
