Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested Jurgen Klopp might be right that “on fire” Mohamed Salah is better than Cristiano Ronaldo at the moment.

Although the Manchester United manager was quick to nail his colours to the mast, adding: “I’ll always back Cristiano in any competition.”

Liverpool boss Klopp labelled Salah the best player on the planet following the Reds’ 5-0 demolition of Watford, in which he put in a man of the match performance.

“Come on, who is better than him?” said Klopp.

“We don’t have to talk about what [Lionel] Messi and Ronaldo have done for world football and their dominance but, right now, he is the best.”

Solskjaer was asked for his opinion in his Friday press conference and agreed Salah is playing at the top of his game.

“I’ll always back Cristiano in any competition,” Solskjaer said. “He’s unique and his goalscoring record has been fantastic, but that being said, Salah is at the moment on fire.

“You see some of the goals he’s scored lately and we have to be at our best to play against him. We have to enjoy these players from afar – not Sunday, that’s too close.

“But we’ve got to do a good job and not just against him. I’m a big admirer of the front line, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, maybe Diogo Jota will play.

“They are players you have to focus on and you have to be nailed on for 90 mins to keep a clean sheet.”

Klopp was asked to elaborate further on the Salah vs Ronaldo debate in his Liverpool press conference but refused to back his man so enthusiastically this time round.

“Why should we compare them?” he asked.

Adding: “Both are world-class players. Mo’s left foot is probably better. Cristiano is slightly better in the air and with the right foot. Both pretty quick and desperate to score goals.”
