Although that would involve Steven Gerrard’s Villa beating Pep Guardiola’s stars 6-0 on the final day on Sunday.

The Liverpool legend would have to do it on City’s patch too.

But in the incredible event of that happening, and Liverpool and Wolves drawing 5-5 at Anfield, then football fans would be treated to a historic play-off.

Those results would see both teams finish the season on 90 points.

Not only that, but the goal difference, goals scored and the head-to-head results between City and Liverpool would be identical.

Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s sides would finish on a goal difference of 66, having both scored 96 goals, and the two league fixtures between the teams finishing 2-2.

And top-flight rules state that a play-off will be used to determine the champions in that eventuality.

League chiefs have not yet made any formal planning for the event.

But it’s understood the most-likely provisional date for what would be the most important single match in the history of the competition is Wednesday May 25.

That is just three days before Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Old Trafford – home of the biggest rival to BOTH clubs, Manchester United – is the most-likely venue to host the clash.

If that date is not selected, the earliest other day for the game would be June 8, 17 days AFTER the end of the season.

International fixtures will get in the way of the play-off being held, with games being played across the world from June 5 onwards.

Although Fifa give their consent for players from both sides to miss scheduled internationals in June.
