Joe Gomez appears to be making big steps in his recovery from his season-ending knee injury after sharing a video of himself starting ball work in the gym and jogging outside.

This week Jurgen Klopp said it was ‘unlikely’ the Liverpool and England defender would play at the postponed Euros this summer following surgery in November to repair a knee tendon.

The Liverpool boss is hoping Gomez will return for pre-season, but the centre-back gave Reds fans a boost by posting a video of his recovery on Instagram.

The Premier League champions have been without Gomez since November, when the defender suffered a knee injury in an England training session.

They also lost Virgil van Dijk to a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury in the first Merseyside derby of the season in October and fellow centre-back Joel Matip to ankle ligament damage at the end of January.

‘To be honest the information I have at the moment, it will be unlikely,’ Klopp said, when asked about Van Dijk and Gomez’s chances of playing at the Euros.

‘Not that I wouldn’t let them go but because of the extent of the injuries.

‘It’s not about talking which competition they can play in. As far as I know, and I am always open for positive surprises and they all of a sudden show up in training, nobody told me (they are nearly ready).

‘We all hope they will be ready to start the pre-season with us. These are really serious injuries.

‘The two of them (Van Dijk and Gomez) look better at the moment than Joel because he is still in his “ski boots”.

‘Joe is starting running, Virgil is already running but this is really a tough one. We are completely over the moon when they are ready to train with us for the start of pre-season. The Euros, I didn’t think about it.

‘I understand the wishes but we can not make this decision and we will not. It is just when they will be fit.’

Liverpool have slumped to sixth in the Premier League without the three central defenders and Klopp was forced to buy two backup centre-backs in Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies in January.

He has trialled 20 different centre-back pairings but looks to have settled on a preferred combination in Kabak and Nathaniel Phillips, who were assured in Liverpool’s most recent back-to-back wins against RB Leipzig and Wolves.
