Graeme Souness tells England it’s “not coming home” in brutal assessment of Scotland draw

Graeme Souness declared “football isn’t coming home” as he singled out Harry Kane for stinging criticism after England’s goalless draw with Scotland.

The Three Lions arrived at Euro 2020 as second-favourites to lift the trophy, hot on France’s heels, but they were unable to break down the team ranked third-lowest at the tournament.

Kane, 27, drew heavy criticism for another lacklustre display at centre-forward, adding to his fruitless performance in the 1-0 victory over Croatia on Sunday.

Former Scotland midfielder Souness went so far as to say the visitors had “an easy night” defending the Tottenham striker while pouring cold water on England’s hopes of European glory.

“The centre-backs had an easy night against him. Harry Kane looks a shadow of the player we know he is,” the Liverpool legend told ITV Sport .

“In two games, as Roy (Keane) said, he looks leggy, lacking enthusiasm, I know a centre-forward, really, is 90% reliant on the type of passes he’s getting and he’s not getting a great deal from that midfield.

“Harry doesn’t look himself, he looks shady and looks tired. This is a guy who’s hoping to get a big move this summer, he needs to wake himself up.

“He came off in the first game, is he carrying something (an injury)? Because he looks a shadow of himself.

“He’s England’s one player who has proven at this level to get goals on a regular basis and if that’s not happening in this competition – you’re not going very far.

“Without Harry Kane, football isn’t coming home with that team, I can tell you. Not the way they’re playing.”

Kane was hauled off by Gareth Southgate in the 74th minute of the match, with Marcus Rashford introduced as England’s desperation grew.

Explaining the decision to take off his captain, Southgate said: “We needed more runs in behind, I felt Marcus Rashford would give us that energy.

“At that point we had got to try and get the goal. We have to make these decisions based on what we see.

“The whole team can look at ourselves, that starts with me, we’ve got to be better. We didn’t do enough to win the game tonight, not enough attempts on goal, we have to go away and look at that.”

Southgate’s comments were met with concern from former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, especially regarding Kane.

“Kane is a big problem,” said Kenae. “Gareth, we saw in the interview he was very disappointed with the energy levels, but Gareth got a lot of praise the other day (against Croatia), tonight he will probably be criticised.”
