Alexander-Arnold sends message to in attendance Gareth Southgate after Liverpool winner

Trent Alexander-Arnold has sent a pointed message on Instagram after scoring a late winner for Liverpool with Gareth Southgate watching in person.

It came in a crucial win at Anfield on Saturday afternoon after beating Aston Villa 2-1, their first league home win in 2021.

But they did so in dramatic fashion, going a goal down after Ollie Watkins opened the scores for the visitors just before half-time.

Mohamed Salah grabbed an equaliser shortly after the second half whistle as the Reds cranked up the pressure.

However, it looked like another missed opportunity with the match going towards a draw before Alexander-Arnold struck.

Gareth Southgate was in attendance as Liverpool beat Aston Villa late on

The 22-year-old found himself in an unusual left-wing position with the seconds ticking down.

Using Jacob Ramsey, he curled a shot past Emiliano Martinez to earn the Reds the three points with Southgate watching on.

Alexander-Arnold was dropped for the latest England squad last month and it led to some serious debates, not least between Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

And the youngster was keen to make sure he was noticed with his latest post on Instagram.

In a picture of him celebrating his goal, the post was captioned: “Are you not entertained?!”

It seemed an almost point towards Southgate though the right-back, who has 12 caps for the Three Lions, has been criticised for his defending in recent outings and was at fault against Real Madrid in the Champions League midweek.

But Jurgen Klopp was baffled by the decision to drop him from the international set-up.

“I was surprised when he didn’t get the call-up. I respect the decision, of course I do. But I didn’t understand it,” said the Reds boss last week.

“I am a manager myself, I make decisions every day, every weekend, every midweek about team selections and squad selections.

“We always make decisions that other people probably do not understand.

“If Trent Alexander-Arnold is not in the squad of England then England must have an extremely good squad, let me say it like this.”
