Cristiano Ronaldo: It’s hard to take when an entire nation is harmed

Cristiano Ronaldo has played down images of himself throwing his captain’s armband down in disgust while playing for Portugal against Serbia.

The Juventus forward threw his armband to the floor in anger after Portugal were denied a late winner in Belgrade.

Ronaldo looked to have squeezed the ball over the line by the time Stefan Mitrovic got back to clear, yet the goal wasn’t given. It would’ve been the winner, with the World Cup qualifier locked at 2-2.

“Being captain of the Portuguese national team is one of the greatest honours and privileges of my life,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram.

“I give and will always give my best for my country – that will never change.

“But there are difficult times to cope with, especially when we feel like an entire nation is being harmed.

“Pick your heads up and on to the next challenge now! Come on Portugal!”
