Roy Keane laid into Harry Kane after England drew blank against Scotland on Friday evening, even claiming he may be distracted by the transfer saga around his future.
Despite being heavy favourites, the Three Lions failed to see off Scotland at Wembley.
England captain and main goal threat Kane failed to register a shot on target for the second time at Euro 2020, having also underwhelmed against Croatia.
And Keane admitted that Kane needed to pull his finger out for the nation’s sake.
“He doesn’t look up to speed,” Keane said on ITV. “He’s on his heels all the time and if England really want to compete in this competition, you need your star men to perform.
“We’ve seen [Romelu] Lukaku turn up, [Kevin] De Bruyne, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, they need Kane at his best.”
Kane was eventually taken off by Gareth Southgate, who looked to Marcus Rashford to inject some pace and impetus onto the game.
And Keane believes it was the right call, even if it did not prove to turn things around for England.
He added: “I’m glad Gareth took him off – there’s talk about him being undroppable, he’s the main man, if he’s not performing, get him off. Rashford gave them a little bit more energy, but still not enough.”

Kane is being linked with a big-money move to Manchester United, Manchester City or Chelsea this summer as he seeks some silverware.
And with no developments yet over the Tottenham star’s future, Keane could not deny that the situation could well be playing on his mind.
“Before the competition, there was all the talk of him might be leaving Spurs and maybe he’s been distracted by that because that can be an energy zapper,” Keane went on.
“If you thinking you’re moving clubs or if you’re in talks with other clubs, that’s not helpful.”
Scotland legend Graeme Souness was in agreement that Kane was far from his best, admitting he looked tired and needed to buck his ideas up if he wants to clinch a move this summer.
“Harry doesn’t look himself, he looks shady and looks tired,” said Souness.
“This is a guy who’s hoping to get a big move this summer, he needs to wake himself up. He came off in the first game, is he carrying something? Because he looks a shadow of himself.
“He’s England’s one player who has proven at this level to get goals on a regular basis and if that’s not happening in this competition – you’re not going very far.
“Without Harry Kane – football isn’t coming home with that team, I can tell you, not the way they’re playing.”
