Real Madrid News: The perfect business of Operation Varane

Raphael Varane has brought his 10-year career at Real Madrid to an end after his move to Manchester United was confirmed on Tuesday evening. The deal has left all parties involved satisfied, as Varane now prepares for his next stage at Old Trafford after his glittering decade in the Spanish capital.

The French central defender is relishing the move, having felt that his time with Los Blancos had come to a natural end.

He has signed a four-year contract with an extra year as an option, as his annual salary will increase from six million euros at Real Madrid to 11m euros with the Red Devils.

Real Madrid know that securing 50m euros for a player who was in the final year of his contract is an excellent piece of business and represents a significant financial boost.

It could also help them in their pursuit of Kylian Mbappe as, should Paris Saint-Germain choose to enter into negotiations this summer, these funds would be vital.

The 28-year-old has become the fourth-largest sale in Real Madrid‘s history, after Cristiano Ronaldo (117m euros to Juventus), Angel di Maria (75m euros to Manchester United) and Alvaro Morata (66m euros to Chelsea).

The transfer also helps out Lens, the club Varane moved from to Real Madrid in the summer of 2011, as they will earn 1.2m euros due to a 2.5 percent sell-on fee that was agreed back in 2011.

Now, Manchester United have finally secured the signing of a player that they have wanted to bring in since 2010, but it was Real Madrid who secured his signature then instead. In an interview with L’Equipe in 2014, Varane revealed that Manchester United‘s decision to sign Phil Jones that summer convinced him to move to Real Madrid.

He has finally made it to Old Trafford, arriving in his prime and ready to try to conquer the Premier League.
