The Manchester United legend was speaking after the defeat to Young Boys in their Champions League opener.

It came about in embarrassing fashion, as well, after throwing the match away despite being in cruise control.

Everything was looking rosy when Bruno Fernandes set Cristiano Ronaldo up for his third goal in two matches with a delicious pass.

But United capitulated soon after following Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s straight red card when the right-back left his studs up in a dangerous challenge that left the referee with no choice.

Solskjaer immediately took Jadon Sancho off for Diogo Dalot and changed Donny van de Beek for Raphael Varane at half-time.

However, the Norwegian’s decisions backfired on him while in the second half he made more bizarre choices when he took Fernandes and Ronaldo off for Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matic.

Young Boys utterly dominated the second half and were more than worth their equaliser through Moumi Ngamaleu while United could not even get out of their own side of the pitch.

With 10 seconds left of extra time, Lingard committed the cardinal sin of attempting a lazy pass back to his goalkeeper David de Gea.

It gave Theoson Siebatcheu the simple task of netting past the Spaniard to hand Young Boys the three points in embarrassing fashion for the Red Devils.

As a result, United tasted defeat in their opening match of the Champions League and Scholes tore into Solskjaer’s substitution decisions.

He told BT Sport: “It’s Basaksheir all over again. We were here last season and rueing mistakes.

“That’s a big mistake at the end of the game from Jesse who done really well at the weekend. Just goes to show wherever you go in Europe it’s tough.

“You have to be on your game. You have to be mentally tuned in. Yeah, they started well and a decision in the game can change it. It was a bad touch, a bad tackle then the game turned on its head totally.”

Fans were left furious with United’s gameplan after going down to 10 men and taking aim at Solskjaer, comparing their situation to that of Chelsea before the international break when they held Liverpool with a man down at Anfield for 45 minutes.

And Scholes believes his former side must land a trophy this season after their expensive summer transfer splurge in a guarded warning over Solskjaer’s future.

“That’s what you expect from Man United [to sign the best players], it’s been a quiet time over the last few years,” he said.

“Ole has now built a squad that is capable of winning the big prizes and that’s what he has been brought to do.

“The only difference is the quality of the managers, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool have proven winners.

“You’ve got Ole who has done a fantastic job building this squad, now is the time with that squad of players. He has to win something.”
