Marcus Rashford out of England’s Euro 2024 qualifiers v Italy, Ukraine due to injury along with Nick Pope, Mason Mount

Marcus Rashford has withdrawn from the England squad for upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine due to injury.

Rashford was taken off in the 83rd minute of Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham on Sunday.
It has been confirmed by England he will not play a part in the matches against Italy on March 23 and Ukraine on March 26 after picking up a “knock”.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope and Chelsea’s Mason Mount are also out of the squad.

Pope played for Newcastle against Nottingham Forest on Friday evening but England have said he has withdrawn due to injury.

Mount was called up despite not playing for Chelsea since February 26 – and again missed the 2-2 draw with Everton at the weekend as he continues his recovery.

Tottenham’s Fraser Forster, who has deputised in recent weeks in the absence of Hugo Lloris, has been called up to replace Pope.

A statement from England said: “No further replacements are planned and 23 players arrived at St. George’s Park on Monday.”

It is not known how serious Rashford’s injury is and whether he will also miss games for Manchester United.

Rashford has been in red-hot form since returning from the World Cup and has scored 27 in all competitions for United this season.

United face Newcastle, Brentford and Everton after the international break before the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla.

That Mount won’t feature for England is not much of a shock given he has been unavailable for Chelsea.

His initial inclusion in the squad was a surprise for Blues manager Graham Potter though.

“He’s never been available as far as I’m aware,” said Potter ahead of the weekend’s draw with Everton.

Asked if he was surprised to see Mount selected by England, Potter replied: “Yeah.

“Probably, as a club, we will (seek clarity on what happened). I don’t have all the contacts of all the doctors and so it’s not like I’m up to (speed) on everything here.

“But as far as I was aware, he wasn’t going to be available for us at the weekend. He needed a bit of time for his injury to settle down, which pretty much ruled him out of the England thing.

“Whether that means they needed a bit of time to double-check that, I don’t know. But I don’t think there’s anything untoward at all, it’s more that sometimes these things can be named and there are still a couple of days where things can be changed.

“But as far as I was aware, from my selection perspective, he was unavailable for the weekend.”

Potter is “hopeful” that Mount will be available after the international break, when Chelsea play Aston Villa, Liverpool and Wolves in the Premier League, and then Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
