Prospective new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has been prematurely welcomed to the club by one of the club’s sponsors.

Hotel and accomodation search engine Trivago, which are the Stamford Bridge outfit’s training shirt sponsor, posted a message on social media welcoming the American billionaire to Chelsea – despite the fact that their takeover is yet to be finalised. But there’s a simple explanation for the message, which appeared on social media on Tuesday.

It comes as the Premier League is set to give its approval for the takeover led by Boehly to go through. And Ben Chilwell has had an emotional return to training after six months battling back from a horror anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Boehly given Chelsea ‘welcome’

Chelsea sponsor Trivago has accidentally welcomed prospective owner Todd Boehly to the club a little too soon.

US magnate Todd Boehly has struck a £4.25billion deal to buy the Stamford Bridge club, but the sale must be completed by May 31 when Chelsea’s temporary Government trading licence expires. And training shirt sponsor Trivago jumped the gun in welcoming Boehly to Stamford Bridge with the takeover yet to be finalised.

Posting on Twitter on Tuesday, the hotel and accomodation search engine wrote: “Welcome to the @ChelseaFC family, Todd Boehly! #LetsGo.” But the message appears to have been a simple scheduling error.

Premier League to grant approval

Todd Boehly’s Chelsea takeover bid is set to gain the approval of the Premier League despite one key detail over the sale yet to be agreed upon.

Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Boehly has won the race to buy the Blues, and is now only Premier League and Government approval away from ending Roman Abramovich’s 19-year tenure at Stamford Bridge. There’s a big issue with a £1.5 billion loan that hasn’t been paid back, and Abramovich has stated that he wants the revenues to go to a humanitarian organisation that helps victims of the Ukraine war but the Government has major fears over the terms of the deal.

With the takeover needing to be finalised by May 31, the Premier League has already carried out some background checks on Boehly even before the Owners and Directors’ Test and is ready to grant its approval to the purchase.

Chilwell returns to training

Chelsea full-back Ben Chilwell made an emotional return to training following his battle back from a horror injury.

After sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the Blues’ Champions League triumph against Juventus in November, the England international has been out for six months. Chilwell has now been seen receiving a round of applause from his teammates in footage shared by Chelsea, as well as sharing embraces with Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta and manager Thomas Tuchel as he reported back for duty.
