“We’re not starting at zero; we’re starting in the minus”

The fourth goal “pulled the carpet from underneath us” said the head coach. “You can’t really give an opponent more of an invitation than we did today. We lost through our own failures,” said the scorer of the equaliser to make it 1-1. After the game, Edin Terzic and Julian Brandt shared their thoughts.

Edin Terzic (to DAZN): “The week was very disappointing. We set out with very big ambitions for today’s game, and you could also sense our ambition at the beginning. But we conceded the first goal after four minutes. It was a pass that completely cut through us. We gave away far too many goalscoring opportunities in the first half. We defended very badly in many phases. Nonetheless, it could have been 3-3 at half-time. We had very many very good opportunities to score goals. In the second half, we set out to keep our foot on the gas and to repeatedly put them under stress – and not to concede a goal. That went out the window after the first minutes; that pulled the carpet from underneath us. All of the things that we did well in the first half – our build-up in triangles, our wing play – was completely gone. In the second half, we didn’t have any more clear chances to score. Now we have a deficit that we have to make up for starting in January. We’re not starting at zero, we’re starting in the minus.”

Sebastian Kehl: “At half-time, we had the feeling that we were back in it. Then it took 40 seconds for us to concede the fourth goal. After that, we were no longer good enough. We’re giving away far too much. The defeat really hurts. We cannot be successful if we defend like that. We will spend the winter break in sixth place. I don’t need to emphasise that that is a long way from our expectations. That will make for some uneasy weeks for us. We have several issues we need to work on. Offensive and defensive.”

Julian Brandt (to SAT.1): “We were caught napping in the decisive moments. We moved the ball about well and applied pressure in the first minutes. But the first loss of possession led to the first counter, and again you’re chasing an early 1-0 deficit. Exactly the same in the second half. No question about it, Gladbach played a good game and took their chances ruthlessly. But you can’t really give an opponent more of an invitation than we did today. We lost through our own failures. It’s a very heavy weight on the shoulders. Losing twice before a winter break is sh*tty.”
