SunSport reported last week that the Clarets were hoping to finalise the appointment of the ex-Belgium international defender providing they stayed in the Premier League.

However a last day victory for Leeds at Brentford kept Jesse Marsch’s men in the top flight at the expense of Burnley who lost to Newcastle on the same day.

Despite relegation there is still some optimism at Turf Moor that Kompany could still be tempted to join.

He is believed to be on a three man short-list drawn up by chairman Alan Pace with the hope a new boss can be in place by the end of the month.

Pace may need to convince any manager who comes in that a good enough structure and budget is in place to guide them back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Kompany guided boyhood club Anderlecht to successive third placed finishes in Belgium, just missing out on Champions League qualification.

He fears the club now requires another rebuild and he does not believes he will get the funds needed so him leaving looks likely.

A couple of clubs in Germany have also shown an interest in Kompany with Borussia Monchengladbach and Wolfsburg both rumoured to be keen.

Burnley caretaker boss Michael Jackson came within a whisker of keeping the Clarets up after taking over from Sean Dyche over the Easter weekend.

They took 10 points from his first four matches in charge to give them hope of an unlikely escape but one draw and three defeats in their final four matches saw them relegated.

Key players such as Nick Pope and James Tarkowski are expected to depart as a result.
