The Red Devils have had a fruitful summer, signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for £73million and agreeing a £42million deal for Raphael Varane.

Real Madrid centre-back Varane will complete his transfer to Old Trafford after he undergoes a medical and he will significantly bolster Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s options in defence.

But former United captain Keane insists more business is required to rival Chelsea and City, both of whom have agreed marquee arrivals of their own.

Discussing his former club’s business, the Irishman told ITV Sport : “Two very good signings, particularly Varane with his experience with the problem at the back. Sancho, a young, talented player who did well in Germany.

“I still think what City have done and Chelsea with [Romelu] Lukaku, United still need one or two into the group to really challenge.”

Pep Guardiola’s City completed a British-record £100million deal to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa on Thursday night, while Thomas Tuchel’s Blues have agreed a £97.5million transfer for Inter Milan striker Lukaku.

Premier League-champions City may strengthen further by signing Harry Kane from Tottenham, while the Blues are heavily linked with Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde.

United, meanwhile, are linked with Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier and Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, but Solskjaer insists any more arrivals would be a “bonus”.

The Red Devils boss added: “I have to say that with the two signings we’ve got, we’ve strengthened where we wanted to strengthen.

“Let’s see what happens. You never know in football. Anything can happen, ins and outs.”

One of Solskjaer’s main aims this transfer window has been to keep hold of Paul Pogba, who is out of contract next summer and has previously expressed his desire to leave the club.

Talks with the France midfielder’s representatives have been underway for many weeks and Solskjaer maintains things are “positive” at the negotiating table.

“I hope every player thinks this is the place to be to win trophies,” said Solskjaer. “When you sign for Manchester United, you have to rise to the challenge.

“Paul has come back [from Euro 2020] and he’s fresh and he’s always such a positive boy. The talks I’ve had with him have all been positive.”

United won their final game of pre-season in convincing fashion with a 4-0 drubbing of Everton on Saturday, while they begin their Premier League campaign against rivals Leeds United next Saturday.
