Monday night under the lights – U23s set for trip to Wiesbaden

Borussia Dortmund’s U23s will round off Matchday 9 of the 3. Liga season with a trip to Wehen Wiesbaden on Monday evening. Kick-off at the Brita-Arena is at 19:00 CET.

Having trained well on Sunday afternoon, the Black & Yellow contingent made the trip to the state capital of Hesse. Following the defeat against Magdeburg last time out, the focus was quickly shifted to the next match. “We know how to put the defeat into perspective. We played a very strong opponent,” BVB boss Enrico Maassen said after the match. The week of training that followed was used to ensure the squad are optimally prepared to face Wiesbaden.

However, BVB coach Maassen will have several players unavailable. Marco Hober, Moritz Broschinski, Luca Unbehaun, Florian Krebs, Marco Pasalic and Steffen Tigges are all missing through injury. There are also question marks hanging over Tobi Raschl and Ansgar Knauff, who were part of the first-team squad on Sunday evening.

Like BVB, opponents Wiesbaden have 14 points this season and the men from Hesse, who sit in fourth place, are only above the Black & Yellows on goal difference. In the last three outings, coach Rüdiger Rehm’s charges beat Saarbrücken and slipped to defeats against Viktoria Berlin and Magdeburg. In total, the men from Wiesbaden conceded 10 goals across the aforementioned three matches, having let in just one goal in their previous five matches.

Wiesbaden’s squad is brimming with experience. Captain Sebastian Mrowca has already made over 120 third-tier appearances, while SVWW defender and BVB fan Sascha Mockenhaupt has played over 300 times in the second and third divisions (he’s our guest on the latest episode of the BVB podcast). The most dangerous frontman is the Swede Gustaf Nilsson. The 24-year-old attacker has already scored four goals and notched three assists.
