Man Utd transfer round-up: Red Devils prepare second Sancho bid as Saul race narrows

Manchester United are busy hustling and bustling in the transfer market to strengthen their side.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co endured a fourth season without a trophy last time out, finishing 12 points behind Premier League title winners and cross-city rivals Manchester City.

Countless names are linked to the club every summer and this time around is no exception after the Norweigan manager made a plea for more bodies in the first-team frame next term following their Europa League final defeat last month.

The 2021-22 campaign is set to be a big one for the club, coming off the back of successive top-four finishes for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest transfer news at Old Trafford.

Two-horse race for Saul

United and Italian giants Juventus have been named as the two most likely destinations for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez by Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish outlet suggest that the Red Devils are interested in the 26-year-old, who could be sold to balance the books of the recent La Liga title winners.

Chelsea are named as another interested club, but it’s United and the Serie A side who’re said to be showing the most interest.

Although Saul has an eye-watering £128m release clause, he’d reportedly be available for £68m this summer.

In terms of how the Spaniard could fit into Solskjaer’s side, he’d likely play next to Scott McTominay or Fred at the base of midfield, thanks to his defensive qualities and dribbling ability.

Second Sancho bid

Last week, the Red Devils reportedly had a bid of £67m rejected by Borussia Dortmund for their star winger, Jadon Sancho.

The Times claim BVB want a transfer fee of £77.5m and add-ons that could rack up to £86 million.

The report outlines that Old Trafford chiefs are now working on a new offer that’d include more success bonuses.

The England international, who spent yesterday’s win over Croatia on the bench, recently told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Dortmund is a quiet city, it is easy to go to training and go home. The fans love football and that is a good thing.

“Not being close to my family is the only thing [I don’t enjoy] but that is part of life.”

On the speculation surrounding his future, the 21-year-old said: “I don’t really focus on the media, I just focus on myself and what I need to do on the pitch.”

Lingard longing to stay

Jesse Lingard has held a ‘candid’ meeting with Solskjaer and has informed the boss of his desire to stay at the club, according to The Sun.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a sensational loan spell with West Ham during the second half of last season, scoring nine goals and laying on four assists in 16 Premier League appearances.

Despite performing superbly under David Moyes and helping guide the Irons into the Europa League for next term, Lingard is said to have admitted to friends that he hopes to rebuild his United career.

The Englishman, who didn’t make Gareth Southgate’s 26-man final Three Lions squad this summer, reportedly hasn’t ruled out a return to the London Stadium, but it wouldn’t be his preference.

Having flourished under Solskjaer whilst he was interim manager, Lingard almost went a full top-flight term without scoring until he struck the Red Devils’ final goal of the 2019-20 campaign.

Many have speculated that he could be used as a makeweight for United to sign West Ham’s Declan Rice.
