Man Utd chiefs ‘hold showdown talks’ with Edinson Cavani in bid to keep striker

Manchester United chiefs are set to hold showdown talks with Edinson Cavani ahead of his prospective summer exit.

The Uruguayan will see his one-year deal with the Red Devils expire at the end of the season.

It comes after signing a short-term contract with United on deadline day last year following his release from Paris Saint-Germain.

There is speculation that Cavani is keen on returning to South America and Boca Juniors are a potential destination.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to keep hold of the 34-year-old for another season after a number of fine performances, though he has been limited to a number of bench appearances.

Cavani has scored six times in 18 Premier League matches but his experience has been invaluable, especially for the likes of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

According to the Daily Mail, United chiefs Ed Woodward and John Murtough are set to sit down with the striker and his representatives.

The idea of the meeting is to convince the veteran star that he should stay at Old Trafford for another year.

However, it remains to be seen whether Cavani will stay for much longer, particularly after a scathing review from his father Luis.

He told Argentine TV channel TYC Sports that he wants his son to leave and join a team “that fights for something” just earlier this month.

He said: “My son does not feel comfortable in England and wants to be close to the family again.

“Edinson is going to end up playing in South America. I want Edinson to play in a team that fights for something important.

“Edinson had many conversations with Riquelme and he would like to play for Boca.”

United are in the market for a striker after being less than convinced with Anthony Martial’s ability as a frontman.

Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland is top of the wish list after a stunning season where he has 33 goals in 31 appearances.

However, the Red Devils are not the only ones interested in the Norway international, with Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and PSG keen.
