As the pair speak in German, Klopp can be heard saying: ‘It’s unfair and unfair is the worst thing you can say about a referee’.

Brych looks unfazed by the criticism he receives from the former Borussia Dortmund boss and simply replies: ‘Jurgen, what you’re doing now is unfair too.’

Klopp continued his tirade at Brych after while speaking to the media after the game and refused to let the issue rest, insisting he had made ‘personal decisions’ against Mane, explaining he had simply told the referee he was unfair to the Sengalese star.

‘The situation with Sadio, I’m not sure what the ref did tonight,’ a livid Klopp said. ‘It seemed like it was sort of personal.

Liverpool were off the pace at the the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, Real Madrid’s training ground, and Klopp admitted the ‘strange’ atmosphere affected his side, while also conceding his players were not good enough.

‘If we want to go to the semi-finals we have to earn the right to do so and we didn’t do that, especially in the first half,’ Klopp said after the final whistle.

‘The only good thing I can say about the game, apart from the goal, is that it is only the first half of the leg. We just didn’t play good enough football tonight to cause Real Madrid more problems.

‘I thought it would have been possible but we have to show it in the next game. We made it too easy for them.

‘This was strange tonight because it was really difficult with the stadium (at Madrid’s training ground) but Anfield is at least a proper stadium and it will be good for us.’
