Graeme Souness has urged Chelsea to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

The Sky Sports pundit believes that the strength of the Blues’ squad is second only to Manchester City’s in the Premier League, but insists Thomas Tuchel’s side need to sign a proven goal scorer to compete for the top honours.

Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 4-1 at Selhurst Park on Saturday to move up to fourth, but Souness believes despite the emphatic win they’re still lacking the kind of quality up front that will enable them to win the ‘big trophies’ in the future.

‘When you look at the team that started for Chelsea today and look at the subs, I would put Chelsea as having the second strongest squad in the Premier League behind (Manchester) City. Souness told Sky Sports.

‘Other than having an out and out 25-30 goals a season man, Chelsea are pretty near the finished article. If they get that, they’ll be very dangerous. If they can land one in the summer you never know.

‘No one is talking about them for the guy at Dortmund, (Erling) Haaland. Would they have a go there?

‘I’m sure the owner would have a go if he saw any encouragement this year that they could be the team to win the big trophies, his eyes are only on the league and the Champions League, Abramovich. I think he would go again (and spend big for Haaland).’

Former England striker and fellow pundit Darren Bent agreed that Haaland would be a success at Stamford Bridge, and believes that Blues striker Timo Werner is lacking in confidence after disappointing first season in England.

‘Haaland certainly would do that (score 25+ a season) and I’m pretty sure they would have thought they had one in (Timo) Werner. Bent told Sky Sports.

‘The way he started I thought maybe they’ve got one here. But obviously his confidence is gone now. He didn’t feature today.

‘With the clear-cut chances they certainly created today, if they did have someone like a Haaland, they would’ve won by 6 or 7.’
