Edinson Cavani makes Man Utd transfer recommendation amid midfield reinforcements search

Edinson Cavani has given Manchester United his recommendation as the club continue their search for a new midfielder.

It comes as the Red Devils close in on their first signing of the summer in the shape of Jadon Sancho.

A saga that has drawn out since last summer, the Englishman is on the verge of completing a move to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund.

His arrival is set to earmark a transfer window of spending from United, with many more targets being eyed.

A defender is wanted but so is a midfielder and a striker, with plenty on the shortlist including Raphael Varane, Eduardo Camavinga and Erling Haaland.

Jadon Sancho of England looks on during the England Training Session at Tottenham Hotspur Training Ground on June 20, 2021 in Burton upon Trent, England.

However, Cavani has his own idea on who should join him at the club and has recommended his Uruguayan pal Nicolas De La Cruz.

According to TNT, the Red Devils are one of five clubs interested in the River Plate star, with Fiorentina also eyeing a move.

De La Cruz has impressed so far at the Copa America, playing all three games so far including the latest victory over Bolivia.

The 24-year-old has been valued at up to €20m and could represent a cheaper option to other targets including Camavinga and Declan Rice.

Just 5ft6, the stocky midfielder has been praised for his nippy footwork and close control and comes with a seal of approval from Cavani.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star signed a new contract earlier this summer to extend his stay at Old Trafford by another year.

It came after a late surge in form that saw United secure a top four spot but the club would end the season without a trophy.

Despite scoring in the final, Cavani could not get his hands on the Europa League trophy after Villarreal beat them on penalties.

Meanwhile, Gary Neville has given his thoughts on where United should strengthen in the transfer window.

He said: “They definitely need a centre-back to go with Harry Maguire.

“Although I think the back four has done well, I think the defence has done well but they’re at an absolute maximum where they are.

“I think Aaron Wan-Bissaka is improving weekly and is getting better. I think if Luke Shaw can stay fit he’s the best and always has been in terms of talent.

“With Harry Maguire they’ve got someone who is incredibly reliable and can lead the team, I just think that another centre back comes in and completes that back four.

“It’s a risk because I think Maguire and Lindelof work really well but it’s a risk you have to take to get to the next level.

“If you look at Dias, Van Dijk, Harry Maguire they’re kingpins in the centre of defence but they all have good partners as well, and I think United need another one in there.

“Up front is an issue. Over the last few years, we’ve never had a fixed right-winger, I think left’s okay with Marcus Rashford. You could argue is Mason Greenwood a right-winger?

“That’s the question is he a right winger or is he a centre forward? If he’s a centre-forward in the long term, Manchester United need a right-winger. If Mason Greenwood is a right-winger, they need a centre-forward.”
