It’s two games, two wins in the league for the BVB women. After the much-celebrated 8-0 win in the Kreisliga A opener against BV Brambauer – and a 12-0 thrashing of Urania Lütgendortmund in the cup – came a somewhat more hard-fought 4-0 (2-0) victory at SF Sölderholz on Sunday.
In front of 400 spectators on the Zur Bergeshöh pitch in Sölderholz, coach Thomas Sulewski’s team did not leave anyone in any doubt as to their dominance for even a second of the game, but struggled to convert their chances and looked a little tired. “The result is OK, but we were just too slow in several situations, and not purposeful enough up-front,” Sulewski commented on the match.
The small sports complex in the south-east of the city had probably rarely experienced something this – 400 fans had come to watch the local derby live. Anyone who thought that the great response to the first BVB women’s games was only a one-off was proven wrong.
Inspired by the beautiful backdrop, the Dortmund women immediately took control of the game. There were no signs of nerves. Ann-Katrin Lau then took the first real chance in the 11th minute. After good work in the build-up by Hannah Goosmann, she fired the ball under the goalkeeper into the goal to make it 1-0. Less than two minutes later, BVB had another reason to celebrate. Carolin Marie Kaul had created the chance herself, initially failing to beat goalkeeper Girardi, but then confidently put the follow-up into the net to put the Black and Yellows 2-0 up. A BVB legend arrived just at the right time to be involved in the celebrations. When Kaul found the back of the net to make it 2-0, Wolfgang Paul arrived to see the BVB football women play live.
After that, the Black and Yellows eased off a little. While they dominated the game and penned Sölderholz into their own half, they were ultimately let down by their final ball or simply failed to beat the impressive Sölderholz goalkeeper Girardi. First, she tipped a powerful shot from Ann-Katrin Lau on to the crossbar on 23 minutes, then parried a header from Virginia Glanzer three minutes later, before steering a corner taken by Luisa Bergmann over the crossbar after 31 minutes.
At the other end, Sölderholz only managed to get into the penalty area of the largely untroubled BVB goalkeeper Sandra Schröer once in the first half. BVB coach Thomas Sulewski was understandably not satisfied with the 2-0 scoreline at half-time. “I think we can do much better,” said the coach on the first half.
After the break, Sölderholz started to get into the game, looking dangerous in front of the BVB goal on a couple of occasions, but then put the ball into their own goal in the 50th minute, leaving them 0-3 down. First Virginia Glänzer on 53 minutes and then Carolin Marie Kaul on 60 minutes missed chances for BVB from close range.
Vanessa Heim also failed to beat Girardi in goal from a very short distance on 64 minutes and again two minutes later. BVB laid siege to the SF Sölderholz goal and took full control, not letting Sölderholz out of their own half, but were too inconsistent in front of goal. Sölderholz almost pulled one back with 15 minutes to go, but BVB goalkeeper Schröer showed quick reactions to parry a dangerous 1v1 situation, and made another save in the 90th minute. “We have Sandra to thank. She made two really good saves and was on the ball,” said BVB coach Sulewski, praising his goalkeeper.
In the end, it was Anna Louisa Zabell who sent the BVB fans home happy. In the 82nd minute, she found herself in acres of space and latched on to Annika Billig’s ball to make it 4-0.
