Borussia Dortmund win two prizes at the GSBS Awards

How sustainable are professional sport clubs? The London-based Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sports (GSBS) team of international members has set itself the task of answering this question. The independent non-profit organisation uses a scientific approach to analyse the sustainability performance of major clubs and associations.

Last Thursday, the GSBS presented the initial results of over 40 influential organisations and recognised their achievements with the GSBS Awards. The reporting covered four different topics: Corporate, Environmental, Social and Governance. BVB took first place in both the “Best Corporate Performance” and the special “Best Total Performance” categories, beating out clubs such as Juventus and Real Betis. The areas of performance analysed included financial sustainability, emissions, travel, women’s quota, transparency and human rights.

Marieke Köhler, director of the sustainability and corporate responsibility department at BVB, represented Borussia Dortmund at the ceremony and the subsequent discussion via video link.

“We are proud and honoured to receive these awards. The collective challenges we face as a society today can only be solved together through the creation of a strong network with equally strong partners. Just like all the other nominated clubs, we are working every day to make our organisation and the world around us better and more sustainable – step by step,” says Köhler.
