Borussia Dortmund mourn the loss of Andreas Bartels

Andreas Bartels, head of BVB’s handball department, passed away during the night on Easter Monday at the age of 57 after a serious illness. Everyone at Borussia Dortmund and the entire handball department are deeply shocked.

“We are devastated by the news. We will all greatly miss Andreas Bartels as a department head, but above all, as a person. Our thoughts are with his relatives, friends and colleagues,” said department chairman Andreas Heiermann. “Andreas Bartels always selflessly dedicated himself to the service of the club. He had a crucial part to play in our current success, I owe him a huge debt of gratitude.”

Andreas Bartels first got involved with the BVB handball department through his work as managing director at Ebbinghaus Automobile, who have sponsored the women’s handball team since 2014.

In 2017, the long-time member of Borussia Dortmund then became deputy director of the handball department, where his primary focus was on the sporting side of things. Bartels was responsible for overseeing numerous high-profile signings and was in charge of assembling the current squad for the women’s handball team.

Andreas Bartels will always have a special place in our hearts and we hope to continue our current sporting success in his honour.
