Bornemann goal is too little, too late – U23s lose in Munich

Borussia Dortmund’s U23s lost 1-2 against Türgücü München at the Olympiastadion in Munich on Sunday afternoon. In an intense match, Munich led 2-0 before BVB came on strong in the final stages. Timo Bornemann scored the only goal for the Black and Yellows in the 87th minute.

The opposition: Hosts Türgücü became the first club in the 3. Liga to change their head coach this week. Peter Hyballa, who previously coached the BVB U19s, replaced Petr Ruman. Munich had only taken three points from their previous four games. Last weekend, they lost 1-3 to Saarbrücken.

Personnel: BVB coach Enrico Maaßen made one change to his starting eleven, with Luca Unbehaun replacing Stefan Drljaca in goal.

The match: Both teams started the match at a high pace. Munich had the first opportunity after four minutes, when Sercan Sararer’s cross narrowly missed the far post. The Black and Yellows had their first shot on goal after nine minutes, as Berkan Taz’s effort flew just wide of the goal.

Both teams played good attacking football until they reached the penalty area, creating several chances in front of goal. Richmond Tachie missed a chance for BVB on 24 minutes before Petar Sliskovic failed to give Munich the lead two minutes later.

The hosts had more possession and looked especially dangerous down the wings. The Black and Yellows were waiting to hit their opposition on the counter-attack, but couldn’t find the final ball in the first half. Türgücü, on the other hand, made the most of their dominance in terms of chances and made it 1-0 after 42 minutes. Alexander Sorge rose the highest after the free-kick was initially cleared and met the second delivery into the box with his head. Luca Unbehaun managed to get his fingertips to the ball, but couldn’t turn it around the post. BVB went into the half-time break one goal behind.

They were much more active in the second half, had more possession and had three good opportunities in the first ten minutes after the break. The Black and Yellows were increasingly keeping the Munich defenders busy, but there was always a Munich leg in the way at the last moment.

Around 20 minutes before the end of the match, the hosts then struck on the counter-attack, making it 2-0 against the run of play. Philip Türpitz finished from 17 yards out, giving Luca Unbehaun no chance. That prompted BVB coach Enrico Maaßen to bring on fresh legs up-front in Timo Bornemann and Ted Tattermusch. Dortmund’s final offensive paid dividends, as Timo Bornemann made it 2-1 with three minutes to go in regulation time. The five minutes of the injury time were again extremely exciting, with a Tattermusch header narrowly missing the goal. In the end, BVB fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat and remain in third place in the table.

BVB U23s: Unbehaun – Finnsson, Dams, Papadopoulos, Pohlmann (Makreckis, 62), Pfanne (c), Raschl, Viet (Bah-Traore, 73), Pherai (Kamara, 73), Tachie (Tattermusch, 73), Taz (Bornemann, 73)

Goals: 1-0 Sorge (42), 2-0 Türpitz (68), 2-1 Bornemann (87)
