Xherdan Shaqiri coy on Liverpool future amid transfer speculation

Xherdan Shaqiri claims he will make a decision on his Liverpool future after Euro 2020.

Shaqiri is part of Switzerland’s squad and says he will speak to his agent when the tournament ends.

Shaqiri has struggled for regular game time in his three years at Liverpool and made just seven starts last season under Jurgen Klopp.

In total, he has made just 18 Premier League starts since joining for £13million from Stoke and has been unable to convince Klopp that he should be a regular.

The former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan playmaker is desperate for more game time and will consider his options in the summer.

Shaqiri, 29, still has two years left on the five-year deal he signed when he moved to Anfield and would struggle to match his reported salary of over £80,000-a-week at another club.

“At the moment, I don’t really want to talk about it,” he told Mirror Sport during his UEFA press conference to preview Switzerland’s game against Italy on Wednesday at the Olympic Stadium.

“I have a contract there and after the Euros, of course, I will talk to my agent.

“We will look at the situation and then we will decide how to proceed.”

The Olympic Stadium could become Shaqiri’s new home and Lazio remain keen on him.

They wanted to sign him last summer before that move fell through and remain interested in him under new boss Maurizio Sarri.

Liverpool would be open to offers for Shaqiri, but they would want a permanent cash deal and do not want to have to subsidise his salary.

Italy boss Roberto Mancini worked with Shaqiri for eight months at Inter Milan in 2015 when he hardly figured.

Mancini claims the former Stoke City star joined Inter from Bayern Munich at a difficult time and rates him as one of the best playmakers on the continent.

“I think Xherdan is a great player,” said Mancini. “He did what he needed to do at Inter, but unfortunately, Inter were still rebuilding at that time.

“I think he is one of the best No 10s in Europe.”

Shaqiri impressed in Switzerland’s first game of the Euros against Wales, and created an assist before being substituted off in his side’s 1-1 draw with Wales.

Speaking about the decision to take him off after the game, Switzerland manager Vladimir Petkovic said: “He showed a good performance but I also thought about the next matches where we need him and I wanted to create more stability in midfield.

“We became a little more passive but this is not only our fault because Wales had to risk more and they had to put in a stronger performance.”
