Thomas Muller points out Kylian Mbappe flaw ahead of Champions League showdown

Thomas Muller has highlighted Kylian Mbappe’s faults ahead of Bayern Munich’s crunch trip to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Mbappe continued his scintillating form in the competition in the first leg of the quarter-final, scoring twice to fire the Ligue 1 club to a 3-2 victory at the Allianz Arena.

With a last-16 hat-trick against Barcelona also under his belt, the Frenchman has racked up eight goals and three assists in Europe’s premier club competition this season.

Mbappe is widely regarded as unplayable when he is at his best, but seasoned Bayern Munich forward Muller has noticed some shortcomings in the 22-year-old’s all-round game.

“With PSG, Neymar and Mbappe usually stay up front, they don’t defend but they stay in a dangerous situation for a counter-attacking chance,” the German – considered one of the most complete forwards of the last decade – told reporters.

Muller also acknowledged the threat Mbappe poses, adding: “He is very dangerous. With our style of play, space will automatically be created. The defence will have an important task.

“You’re never going to be able to keep them out of the game completely.”

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick tipped Mbappe to be recognised as the greatest player in the world in the future.

“He will win the Ballon d’Or one day, I am absolutely convinced of that. He has everything,” said Flick.

“He is fast, he has a good technique and – what is most important – he scores a lot of goals.”

Flick also provided an update on his side’s team news, with the Bavarians severely depleted due to injuries sustained by Robert Lewandowski and Niklas Sule, and Serge Gnabry’s coronavirus diagnosis.

“It’s not so easy when you have so many injured players,” he said.

“Lucas Hernandez trained with us and Leon Goretzka looked good. Both will be in the squad. [Kingsley] Coman and [Jerome] Boateng have also trained.”
