Thomas Muller opens up on Harry Kane’s poor England form ahead of Germany crunch match

Thomas Muller hopes the chat about Harry Kane’s Euros form is still raging in England come Wednesday.

Three Lions captain Kane failed to score in three group games against Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic.

And, worse still, he barely looked like doing so, either.

Now he hopes to break his duck against England’s old foe at Wembley on Tuesday as the two sides face off for a place in the quarter-finals.

But Muller is hopeful the drought will continue to give his country an even better chance of progressing into the last eight.

Muller said: “As a German player, I wouldn’t really mind if that debate was carried on until Wednesday and if we didn’t concede a goal scored by Harry Kane.

“He is somebody who knows deep down that he possibly has to change his own game a little bit.

“I’m not really sure what is at the root of his problem, I can’t really say why he just hasn’t got into a position to score because there haven’t been any changes, have there, in terms of his technique and in terms of his goalscoring ability?

“So I don’t think he is any way negatively influenced by that.”

Like Kane, Muller knows a thing or two about scoring goals.

He added: “In principle, really good forwards need to have patience.

“In their heart of hearts, of course, they are impatient, but any good forward has to lie in wait for his own chance to score to come around.

“Sometimes, goalscorers are the ones with the fewest contacts, but then they have the biggest pictures the next day in the papers.”

Muller has scored 39 goals in 105 internationals but, incredibly, is still to score at a European Championship finals despite this being his third involvement.

Still, his goals for Bayern Munich mean he England supporters will be wary of him this week, as will the fact he scored twice against the Three Lions in their infamous 4-1 defeat at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Muller said: “It’s a beautiful thing for the media and public, you can always talk about the past and revel in memories, but it really doesn’t have anything to do with the game on Tuesday.

“If the English really do feel I’m a ‘threat’ then I would love that to be true, but it really depends on what I’m doing on the pitch and less on the common history England and Germany share.

“It leads us nowhere if I tell my marker that I was good back in 2010, it won’t do any good.”

Meanwhile, Germany are disappointed that UEFA have asked them to host their final training session on home soil to protect the grass at Wembley.

Muller and Co had hoped to get a feel for the pitch and surroundings in a session at the famous stadium but they will now fly to London tomorrow having trained at their base instead.

There is also upset in Germany that less than 2,000 tickets have been made available to Die Mannschaft supporters given that around 40,000 are expected at the game.

Those tickets have gone to Germans living in England.
