The Paris Saint-Germain forward was controversially picked ahead of Robert Lewandowski for France Football’s prestigious award.

The decision to choose Messi over Lewandowski was questioned by many within the game, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

And Messi’s own son, Thiago, has now questioned his latest achievement. In a viral video shared by AS, the youngster asks his dad: “I thought you had six of those [Ballon d’Or trophies].”

Messi replies: “What about this one? There’s a new one.”

The player’s son then asks him why he won it, to which he replies: “I don’t know.”

Messi’s little one wasn’t implying his dad didn’t deserve the award, although the player’s response suggest he knows it was a narrow victory.

Messi received 613 votes for the Ballon d’Or, just 33 more than second-place Lewandowski.

The Argentine enjoyed a great 2021, helping his country win their first Copa America title for 28 years.

At club level, though, Lewandowski has arguably been the best player in the world since the Ballon d’Or was last awarded two years ago.

Since the start of the 2019-20 campaign, the Poland international has score a remarkable 130 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich.

On receiving the Ballon d’Or, PSG ace Messi asked France Football to give Lewandowski the 2020 prize.

Last year’s award was controversially cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, despite most European leagues being played in full.

“Robert, you deserve your Ballon D’Or,” said Messi. “Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner of this award.

“Hopefully France Football will give you the 2020 Ballon d’Or. We all believe you deserved it and I hope you can have it at home.”

Plenty of other leading figures also felt Lewandowski deserved to get the nod.

“Honestly, I don’t understand anything anymore,” said Lothar Matthaus after the Ballon d’Or winner was revealed.

“With all due respect to Messi and the other great players named, none deserved it as much as Lewandowski.

“France Football didn’t award the prize last year, and if only because of all the titles that Robert has won with Bayern 2020, he is unrivalled not only in the last two years.

“But even if you only take 2021 into account, he was better than the rest.

“He broke Gerd Muller’s record of the century, is again top of the top scorers list in every competition and has surpassed everyone nationally and internationally this year as well.”

“There is no doubt that Messi, with Cristiano, has been the player of the last decade,” said Toni Kroos. “But this year there should’ve been others ahead of him.”

Iker Casillas added: “It is increasingly difficult for me to believe in football awards. Messi is one of the best but you have to know who is the most outstanding player after the season. It’s not that hard.”

Oliver Khan said: “Lewandowski would have deserved both the Ballon d’Or and his top scorer trophy because he has performed absolutely at the highest level for years.”
