Cristiano Ronaldo’s future is once more in question.

Manchester United star Ronaldo has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford just a year after returning to the club. A return to boyhood club Sporting CP has been floated, while there has also been reported interest from elsewhere in Europe, notably Bayern Munich and Italian side roma.

United themselves are, Mirror Football revealed, furious that Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes met with new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly about a potential move to Stamford Bridge. Club chiefs have made it clear that Ronaldo is going nowhere in the near future. A high-level source said: “Cristiano is not for sale. We want – and fully expect – him to be with us next season.”

And according to the Daily Star, former United No.7 David Beckham looked into luring Ronaldo to his MLS side Inter Miami. Alas, the ex-England skipper won’t be getting his wish, with an MLS move a non-starter – at least for now.

Ronaldo will not be joining Beckham in Florida at present. Simply put, he’s not ready to move Stateside just now. But the former England international almost certainly won’t be giving up over a future switch, despite having previously said he hoped Ronaldo would stay at his current club.

“Obviously Cristiano is one of the best players over the last 15 years, with Leo [Messi],” Beckham told Sky Sports in May. “To see him stay on, hopefully at United, is important for the fans.

“It’s important to him – we all know how much Man United means to him. He’s still doing what he does best, scoring goals. That’s what Cristiano does. To be doing what he’s doing at his age is really incredible, so hopefully it continues for another year or two.”

Ronaldo is due to meet up with new Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag as the Dutchman looks to prepare his squad for the upcoming season. United finished sixth in the Premier League last term, 13 points outside the top four and a massive 35 behind champions Manchester City, with previous permanent manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and interim replacement Ralf Rangnick failing to get the best out of an expensively assembled squad.

A number of first-teamers are on the way out this summer, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata all out of contract. Ten Hag is also due to add new faces to his squad, with Frenkie de Jong among the manager’s targets, but he will also need to determine the role played by the likes of Ronaldo.

Inter Miami, meanwhile, sit outside the Major League Soccer playoff spots as they look to improve under manager Phil Neville. The former Everton man was a teammate of both Beckham and Ronaldo at Man Utd during his playing career, and has been in charge of the MLS side since early 2021.

They have a number of former Premier League players in their ranks, including former England international defender Kieran Gibbs and striker Gonzalo Higuain, once of Chelsea. However, it looks as though Ronaldo will not be adding his name to that list.
