Barcelona: Sergi Roberto will sign his contract extension next week

Despite being on the receiving end of some rather distasteful reactions from Barcelona supporters during the Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, Sergi Roberto will officially sign his contract extension in the next week.

The agreement between the midfielder and Joan Laporta has already been in place for several days, with only the act of putting pen to paper standing in front of an official announcement.

Jose Maria Orobitg, Roberto’s agent, has been negotiating this extension with the Catalan club for some time, practically since Laporta was elected president.

Initially the idea was to extend for just one season, although that has now been extended to two further seasons with the club.

The biggest obstacle to an agreement was the required salary reduction that has been at the heart of all Barcelona contract renewals in recent months.

It was this downgrade that took the deal longer to be completed than those with Gerard Pique and others, and it’s speculated that the fact he hadn’t yet signed the deal was why he was whistled against Bayern Munich.

Roberto‘s extension will be the first to be completed after the closure of the summer transfer market and now Los Cules’ technical department will turn their attention to securing the respective futures of Ansu Fati, Ousmane Dembele, Pedri and Ronald Araujo.
