The 28-year-old has bagged five goals for the Latics this season since joining from Sunderland this summer and is the third player to have suffered health complications this week.

Earlier this week, Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck had to be taken to hospital after collapsing during his side’s win at Reading on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday evening, FC Sheriff Tiraspol striker Adama Traore went to ground clutching his chest during his side’s Champions League encounter against Real Madrid.

Striker Wyke was treated by Wigan’s medical staff at the club’s Christopher Park training base before an ambulance arrived at the scene to take him to hospital.

“The 28-year-old collapsed during training in the build up to Latics’ Sky Bet League One match at Cambridge United and, after receiving treatment from the club’s medical staff, Charlie was taken to hospital where he continues to be monitored.

“We are pleased to say Charlie is in a stable condition and is in communication with his family, hospital staff and the Club’s medical team.

“Charlie will continue to be monitored closely by an independent medical consultant and the Club’s medical staff over the next few days.”

Wigan chairman Talal Al Hammad added his well wishes in a tweet: “I’m praying that you get better and regain your strength soon Charlie.

“You are in all of our wishes as you recover. We are all keeping you in our thoughts and prayers, hoping you find strength with each new day. Get well soon.”

Wigan’s CEO Mal Brannigan also issued an update on Wyke’s condition: “First and foremost, the absolute priority for everyone associated with Wigan Athletic is Charlie’s health and wellbeing and providing support to him and his family.

“As a Club, we would like to place on record our sincere appreciation to all of the staff within the NHS who, within what we know are challenging times, were excellent in their response and subsequent care for Charlie, working together with our medical team.

“Clearly this news will cause alarm, though we would politely request that the privacy of Charlie and his family is respected. At the appropriate time, we will look to provide further updates to our supporters.”

Wyke has enjoyed prolific scoring stints with Carlisle United and Bradford City in the Football League, while he bagged 42 goals in three seasons with Sunderland before joining Wigan this year.

The incident follows on from Sergio Aguero’s health complications for Barcelona – forcing the former Manchester City striker to be ruled out of action for at least three months.

This summer’s European Championships were overshadowed by Denmark playmaker Christian Eriksen’s traumatic collapse in his nation’s opener against Finland – the Inter star has yet to play since.

Earlier this month, Icelandic midfielder Emil Palsson, 28, suffered a cardiac arrest during a Norwegian second division match.
