Chelsea transfer target Adam Webster has impressed many with his showings in recent weeks, including Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

The Blues are on the prowl for a new centre-back amid speculation over the future of current star Antonio Rudiger, while Thiago Silva’s age means he is unlikely to play at the highest level for much longer.

Cesar Azpilicueta can also be deployed as a central defender if need be but the Spaniard’s future is also up for debate given the recent interest from La Liga giants FC Barcelona.

As a result, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel has explored his options and identified Webster as a player that could potentially be enticed to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Adam Webster has been among the goals recently with two in his last three

The 27-year-old is a regular at the Amex and has caught the eye of a man who knows what it takes to play as a centre-back in the Premier League in Reds icon Carragher.

Last month, during Chelsea’s trip to Brighton, the former England international took to Twitter to sing the praises of the Blues’ latest target.

“Adam Webster’s passing out from the back, with both feet is better than any other English central defender,” wrote Carragher.

Webster has impressed for the Seagulls since his switch from Bristol City in 2019 and has even been the subject of recent shouts for an England call-up.

If the Blues are to secure Webster’s signature, they’ll have to fend off interest from Newcastle United in the process.

The Magpies have already raided Graham Potter’s side once recently after the deadline day acquisition of another Brighton defender in Dan Burn.

Potter has already sung the praises of Webster when it comes to his technical quality recently.

“That is what Adam brings for us, that is his quality, both sides, he has been fantastic and helps us to build our attacks. He was an important signing for us and an important player.”

Webster’s ability on the ball would allow him to slot in seamlessly at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea look to mount a title tilt next season as their challenge in this one looks all but over.

Tuchel’s side are currently away at the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi and as a result miss out on any Premier League action this week.

However, they sit third in the table 16 points adrift of table-toppers Manchester City who have played a game more.

Though talk of a sixth league title has ended for another year, Chelsea remain in the Champions League and FA Cup as well as a date with Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final later this month.
