In life there are many people who earn far more than their performances warrant, and football is no different, as we look to compare the best performing XI of players in world football with the best paid XI.

Skilful agents or desperate clubs are two reasons why such staggering contracts exist in football, as well as the desire to secure the future of a young star in the making.

When comparing the two XIs it’s clear that there is a significant difference, despite some overlap, in the selection of players.

There are five players who are indisputable in both teams, players who have earned their money, and they are Sergio Ramos, Virgil van Dijk, Kevin De Bruyne, Lionel Messi and Neymar.

There are also players who have seen a clear decline in their performances but are still being paid for their previous endeavours, such as Antoine Griezmann at Barcelona, David de Gea at Manchester United and Gareth Bale, who is on loan at Tottenham Hotspur from Real Madrid.

Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe appear in the best XI, alongside Alphonso Davies and Trent Alexander-Arnold, and you feel like it won’t be long before all four are in the highest paid XI too, with Mbappe and Haaland hoping to break that barrier as soon as the summer.
