Real Madrid: Michel: It’s impossible for me to end up coaching Real Madrid, there’s one person who doesn’t like me

Actualizado

Michel Gonzalez is back in charge of Getafe, but everyone knows that one day he would love to coach the club of his heart, Real Madrid.

However, the 58-year-old has accepted that his dream is unlikely to come to fruition due to there being someone at the club who is not a fan of him.

“For some time now, my friends and family have been convinced that [coaching Real Madrid] is something that is not in my plans,” Michel said on El Larguero.

“Because to coach Real Madrid you need more than just a CV, you need something called a ‘lobby’ and I don’t have it.

“I’m not close to the people who make the decisions, I’m not saying this because of [Real Madrid president] Florentino [Perez], with whom I have a magnificent relationship, but for whatever reason the people who work close to Florentino prefer other types of people, other types of coaches, without stopping to think about whether or not I have the right level.”

So, if Michel enjoys a good relationship with Florentino, why is it that he thinks it is impossible that he ends up becoming Real Madrid boss?

“It’s not a question of my CV, experience or my love for Real Madrid, it’s just that, for whatever reason, that person doesn’t like me and I don’t have that option,” Michel explained.

“My agent is not a friend of that person, we are not influential in that, not with the people who make those decisions, and I insist, it is not Florentino.

“It’s impossible that I’ll end up coaching Real Madrid, but I’m not saying that in a bad way, it’s something I’ve always accepted, ever since I’ve been a coach.”

There were some calling for Raul Gonzalez to be promoted from his role with Castilla before Carlo Ancelotti returned as head coach, but Michel believes that Real Madrid should focus their efforts on freshening up their squad.

“I don’t know [if Raul should have been promoted],” he said.

“Just as I don’t know who makes these kinds of decisions… What I think is that, at the moment at a club like Real Madrid, it’s a problem for the coach if they don’t make changes to the squad.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s Raul, Ancelotti, [Zinedine] Zidane, [Jose] Mourinho, [Antonio] Conte… and not Michel [laughs].”

Michel was asked about the financial struggles of both Real Madrid and Barcelona, to which he pointed to the failure of some of the big-money signings.

“The big clubs, mainly Real Madrid and Barcelona, are suffering from the fact that signing [players] for a lot of money is easy,” he noted.

“You can afford mistakes of 50 or 100 million euros. You are talking about [Gareth] Bale or [Eden] Hazard, but at Barcelona[Philippe] Coutinho has been injured, [Antoine] Griezmann has not succeeded…

“I think that the sporting directors have a lot of importance in this, [knowing when is] the right time to dare to sign what is necessary and not what is expensive.

“I personally believe that Atletico Madrid and Sevilla have a better squad than Real Madrid and Barcelona; not a better eleven, but a better squad.”

Zidane‘s decision to pen an open letter discussing his exit from Real Madrid made headlines around the world, but Michel did not see any issue with it.

“I think it’s a correct statement. I’m surprised he did it in a media outlet, but maybe on his social media,” he commented.

“But everything he says seems correct to me. It’s very difficult to put yourself in his shoes, because a coach, even as Real Madrid coach, is often on his own.”
