Real Madrid – La Liga: Zidane is picking off all the top coaches one by one

If Real Madrid were planning on erecting statues of club legends around the new Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, when it came to Zinedine Zidane it would be a question of where to put both of his: his one as a player and his other as a coach.

The Frenchman was once again victorious in El Clasico on Sunday night, with Real Madrid winning both matches against Barcelona in the same season for the first time since the 2007-08 season, when Bernd Schuster was in charge.

Zidane did so by frustrating Ronald Koeman, whose Barcelona side were fulfilling their pre-match plan in the early stages but then found themselves 2-0 down.

Barcelona had most of the possession and were stopping Toni Kroos and Luka Modric from being effective, but just as they did against Liverpool, Zidane‘s side capitalised on their opponent’s weakest areas and took a convincing lead. Fede Valverde got between the lines and Vinicius Junior was dangerous on the counter-attack.

Zidane is making up for earlier disappointments in the season by performing well in the big games, and he could guide Real Madrid to the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday night against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Real Madrid boss is taking down his biggest rival coaches one by one. The list of top coaches he’s seen off this season is growing, with big wins against Koeman, Jurgen Klopp, Diego Simeone, Gian Piero Gasperini and Antonio Conte all under his belt this campaign.

Zidane has already sent a warning about how worn out his side are, but on Wednesday at Anfield they have another huge match ahead of them. Zidane and his players keep turning up on the big occasion, and the Real Madrid fans will be hoping this can continue.
