Europa League victory may well have helped “unlucky” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he eyed long-term success.

Now, former Manchester United star Paul Ince has urged the current team that the only way to make right a disappointing start to the current campaign is to claim some sort of silverware before the season ends.

United axed Solskjaer last month after a humiliating defeat at Watford. Back in the summer though Solskjaer was a penalty shootout away from delivering a first piece of silverware to Old Trafford in four years.

Instead David de Gea’s crucial miss in Gdansk meant Villarreal ran out winners and Solskjaer was unable to arrest the slide this season – despite being handed a new three-year contract.

United promptly lost five of their 12 Premier League games to start the 2021-22 campaign and he was given his marching orders.

Ince concedes that in the early Sir Alex Ferguson days, their league form similarly left a lot to be desired. But continued success in knockout competitions allowed them to progress as a team – something this United side are yet to achieve.

He told Genting Casino : “When I joined in ’89, we were terrible in the league, I think we were 13th in the league that season, but we won the FA Cup, then we won the Cup Winner’s Cup the year after against Barcelona.

“We won the league after that. We were always winning trophies and going up a level to get to where we wanted.

“At the moment, I don’t see that with Man United. I think things might have been different if we had won the Europa League against Villarreal last year.

“I think Ole’s been unlucky in that degree, but when you’re making a change at Man United, and this is a massive, massive change, you’ve still got to be competing, and that’s going to be the hardest thing because fans won’t accept mediocre football.”

Michael Carrick was placed in temporary charge but Ralf Rangnick will take over from this weekend.

A home game against Crystal Palace will be his first outing in the dugout as the German attempts to plot United’s rise back up the table.

He is then set to step back and take up a consultancy role in the summer with a new manager being appointed.

Ince has expressed concerns over Rangnick’s interim post however, citing concerns over whether his successor will follow in his methods.

He added: “Ralf is coming in for six months. After the six months, when his tenure is finished, he’s then got to then hire a manager who’s got the same beliefs as him.

“Say for example it was Pochettino and he had a completely different vision for the way he wants his Man United team playing and the players he wants to sign. That’s the thing about an interim manager.”
