Spanish national team coach Luis Enrique has discussed his choices for the four upcoming international matches.
Spain will be facing Portugal, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic twice between June 2 and June 12.
At the press conference, Enrique talked about Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio who has struggled for form under Carlo Ancelotti this season.
“I’ve seen what I’ve always seen. It’s true that in his team he’s not performing too much but it’s more important what they do here with us,” he said.
“He could be the first to be surprised. Let’s not deceive ourselves, there are losses in his position, but that doesn’t mean he won’t come back. Opportunities are there to be taken.”
Barcelona forward Ansu Fati is returning to the national team setup after having a terrible set of injuries from late November 2020.
Enrique is clearly wary of the 19-year-old’s injury history and he will be eased in gently with minimal game time.
“I have a special plan, we’re not going to take any risks, we’re going to see him train, he’s not going to play a lot of minutes,” Enrique told the press.
“It’s more of a return to competition and to the parameters of the national team. It’s more of a reward than wanting to load him with minutes.”
With the domestic campaigns coming to an end, much attention has turned to the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool in Paris on Saturday night.
The coach was asked who he wants to win the tournament and he gave a diplomatic response.
“No answer I give is going to please everyone, and I like to please everyone. But as I like to be fair, if anyone deserves to win this Champions League, it’s Real Madrid,” he said.
