Liverpool’s ambitious transfer ‘enquiry’ complicates Mohamed Salah contract talks

Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool is a rumour that refuses to go away, but the longer it takes for the superstar to sign a new deal at PSG, the more traction it will gather.

A move to Anfield for the winger always seemed like a long shot and there was never any substance to the claims.

But Mbappe’s uncertain future in Paris has drastically changed things.

The Frenchman has one year left on his current deal, yet to sign an extension and if he doesn’t, he can potentially talk to other clubs in January.

That scenario negates the hefty transfer fee that previously ruled Liverpool out of the running for his signature.

Or at least with 12 months remaining on his deal, that price tag is now more manageable if PSG do not want to lose him for nothing next summer.

And it’s believed that Liverpool have ‘enquired’ about the availability of the French forward this summer, according to Marca.

The report states the Reds would have to sell first to generate the funds for the purchase

It remains to be seen whether a swap deal was discussed but the potential decision would certainly have a knock-on effect for Mohamed Salah’s future at the club, which would only add more tension to what’s been a far from ideal six months between the pair.

The Egyptian has two years left on his current deal at Liverpool and there has been no indication of a new one on its way.

Salah has continually been linked with a move to Real Madrid and Barcelona during his time in England, but it was all noise until he said he would be open to playing in La Liga “one day”.

He told Marca in March: “It’s not up to me. We will see what happens, but I prefer not to talk about that right now.

“I hope to be able to play for many more years, so why not? No one knows what is going to happen in the future, so maybe one day, yes.”

Fast forward to May and, despite Salah’s comments, there was still no sign of a new deal as the forward claimed the club had not attempted to begin talks with him.

He said to Sky Sports about his contract situation: “No one is talking to me about that, so I can’t say much about that.

“No one in the club is talking to me about anything so I do not know.”

And the latest controversy surrounding his Olympics involvement could put even further strain on their relationship.

The Anfield club have turned down a request for the winger to be released to play for Egypt in Tokyo as they are unwilling to grant another absence with his appearance at the African Nations Cup already on the cards for next January.

The Olympics runs from July 22 until August 7, a week before the Premier League begins, and the Reds see this as a crucial stage in pre-season as they put in their final preparations for the new campaign.

Salah plans to challenge Liverpool’s decision in the hope they will change their mind, according to Egyptian Football Association president Ahmed Megahed, but it’s a far from ideal situation for both parties.

Liverpool’s approach for Mbappe only adds more fuel to the fire that his long-term future is away from Anfield.

If Liverpool were to sacrifice one of their heavyweights to sign the PSG star this summer, all signs are pointing towards him.
