Liverpool suffer injury blow as pair miss training ahead of Real Madrid clash

Liverpool were missing a couple of their squad players when they trained at Kirkby ahead of their Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid.

The Reds go into the game 3-1 down on aggregate having lost the first leg in the Spanish capital last week, but also having been buoyed by their late victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday as a run of six successive Anfield losses was brought to an end.

Both Curtis Jones and Divock Origi were absent from the 20-man matchday squad for the Villa win, and neither were spotted in training on Tuesday as the Reds limbered up before the game.

Jones was an unused substitute in Madrid, and he hasn’t played for a single minute of Liverpool’s last six games having been taken off shortly after the hour mark in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on March 4.

Origi is way down the striking pecking order this season, but Jurgen Klopp would doubtless have wanted to have him available as a potential last resort should the Reds be in need of a goal.

The Belgian has scored three times in the Champions League for Liverpool – twice against Barcelona in the 2019 semi-final and then once against Tottenham in the final.

Alisson Becker was also not spotted at the session, although he isn’t expected to miss the match.

The Reds boss has called on his side to give everything they have on Wednesday.

“When you’re 3-1 down it looks like you’re already out,” Klopp said. “That means you have not a lot to lose. We will give it a try.

“You don’t get a comeback because you had a comeback in the past. You only have a chance if you play really good football in the present.

“The best situation would be not to put yourself in a situation where you need a comeback.

“We cannot just take comebacks for granted, especially without a crowd in the stadium.

“We have to create our own atmosphere for this game and we will do.”
